The 9 Best and Worst Fonts to Use for Your Résumé

$

When it comes to résumés, think of font like tone of voice. Your résumé is what speaks for you when a possible employer is sifting through a mountain of candidates. Pick a font that’s too silly or difficult to read, and you’ll be perceived as unprofessional.

Take a look at the nine best and worst fonts to use on your résumé.

The Best

9. Helvetica

Helvetica is one of the most famous and popular typefaces in the world, and for good reason. The font design is simple, professional, and supports the reading process by not straining the eye with complex flourishes. Should you use Helvetica, you’ll be in good company. The typeface is a popular choice for corporate logos including BMW, Target, American Airlines, and Jeep.

8. Times New Roman

Times New Roman is another font that has been widely used for years because of its legibility. The typeface is translated well from book and newspapers to digital environments.

However, there is a spit consensus on whether or not Times New Roman is boring. A font like Times New Roman would be fine for a business job, but if your line of work is design conscious you might want to steer clear of this one. For example, if you’re applying for a job at a graphic design firm, Times New Roman may come across as lazy and unsophisticated.

7. Didot

Didot is a great choice for people wanting to express femininity and sophistication. It’s an intentionally fancy font, so it is only suitable for specific job fields. This typeface would be suitable for a job in fashion, but would be too whimsical for most other careers.

6. Proxima Nova

Proxima Nova is an extremely popular typeface because is solves the few problems associated with Helvetica. It’s similar enough to Helvetica that it still expresses professionalism and honesty, however it’s less stiff than the aforementioned font. It has a slightly rounder appearance, which brings a sense of freshness to a résumé.

5. Garamond

Garamond is a great choice for people who have a lot of information to fit onto one page. The design is small enough to fit a lot of words on a single page, yet doesn’t strain the eye, which can become an issue with other fonts on a text-heavy résumé. The font is easy to read because of the quirks in the design that help show the eye where to move.

The Worst

4. Zapfino

For a wedding invitation you might consider a flowery font like Zapfina, but for anything to do with your job, you should steer clear. Not only is Zapfino, and any other script font, inappropriate for a résumé, but it’s also is very difficult to read. When there are thousands of applicants for one job, the last thing you want to do is make it harder for someone to consider you.

3. Comic Sans

This should go without saying, but you should NEVER use Comic Sans for your résumé. Comic Sans says you are childish, inappropriate, and not serious about the position.

2. Emoji

Yet another thing that has no place on a résumé is an emoji. Yes they’re great when sending a text to your best friend, but a hiring manager is not your best friend. There may be a few jobs where an emoji would be acceptable, but for the vast majority of positions, do yourself a favor, and leave the emojis out of it.

1. Courier

Courier is a caricature of the font world. You aren’t actually using a typewriter, so there’s no reason to use a font that’s pretending to imitate one. Courier is similar to Comic Sans in that it makes you appear unprofessional and and not serious about the opportunity.

Which font do you use for your résumé? Share with us in the comments.

The One Interview Tip Recruiters Don’t Want You To Know

Interviewing for a job can be a particularly stressful event, as you need to be personable while expressing your interest and experience. No matter how much time you’ve spent preparing and researching, there will always be a question or two that catch you off guard because interviews are inherently unpredictable.

While you might not know what the interviewer will ask, you should know what they want to hear. If you don’t find out early on what the goals of the position are, you could very well spend the entire interview talking about skills that have nothing to do with the position. In an interview with SavvySugar, Michael Junge, author of Purple Squirrel and Google recruiter, explained that his number one tip for nailing an interview is to find out what the other person thinks is important at the beginning of the conversation.

“If you and I sat down and I had no idea of what your goals and expectations are in a new hire, I can spend the entire interview talking about elements and aspects of my background that are totally meaningless to you. And I may have experience that’s completely relevant and miss it. And I see this happen all the time.”

Junge explains that the best way to find out this vital information is to simply ask “I have a general idea about the goal of this position, but I’d love to hear in your own words what you’re looking for in a new hire or what makes someone successful.” This kind of questions will get them talking about what kind of expectations there are for the position, and let you know what information and experiences you need to focus on to be more useful.

3 Ways to End Binge Eating According to Kayla Itsines

The tricky thing about eating healthy, fresh foods is that junk food is designed to make you crave it. Everything from the convenience to the perfect ratio of salty and sweet has been carefully created to make you keep coming back for more.

It doesn’t help that we often have emotional ties to these foods, which make binge eating almost impossible to avoid. Think about it, when you get dumped do you reach for the rocky road ice cream, or the apple slices? Most people pick the ice cream ten out of ten times, but that ice cream won’t be doing your mental state or health any favors.

According to Kayla Itsines, physical trainer and Instagram mega-star, remember these three tips the next time you’re bored, upset, or just too lazy to prepare a healthy meal.

3. Get Organized

You might have the best intentions of eating right, but if you don’t get organized, you’ll find yourself surrounded by temptations with a weakened determination. There will always be a candy bowl calling your name at work, but if you prepare meals and snack for yourself ahead of time, you’ll be less tempted to indulge in the chips and candy.

Try setting a day and time each week to get all your food shopping and meal preparation out of the way, so you’ll have healthy, quick options for those days where you’re too tired, tempted, or lazy to eat well.

2. Get to Know Yourself

This might seem silly, but we all have eating patterns and binge-triggers that we don’t even realize. Taking some time to figure out why you eat when and what you do will be a huge part of beating the binge. Do you always reach for the chocolate bar around 2 p.m. when work gets slow? Or maybe you find yourself craving some ice cream after a bad day. Whatever the reason, those foods only make you feel good temporarily, and will leave you feeling guilty once the binge is over.

1. Treat Yourself

This might seem counter-intuitive, but one of the best ways to avoid binge eating, is to treat yourself! Instead of setting limitations on your diet, and ultimately making you want that food more (since we all want what we can’t have), allow yourself to have your favorite treat once a week. Maybe it’s a really decadent meal, or a slice of chocolate cake if you have a sweet tooth. Whatever your treat is, just make sure it doesn’t turn into a binge.

Treating yourself promotes a healthier relationship with foods, and allows you to feel satisfied with your food without feeling guilty for indulging.

Let us know how these three tips work the next time you’re about to binge eat.

This is the Shocking Amount of Editing That Goes Into One Instagram

From Instagram’s very beginning, the social media platform was meant to capture and share beautiful moments with friends and the world. However, with the help of filters, photo-editing apps, and layout tools, Instagram has started to look more like the air-brushed images in magazines and less like a personal photo-diary.

Take a look at any top fashion or lifestyle bloggers and you’ll be sure to find dozens of perfect selfies, and shots of their unnaturally perfect lives. While the goal is to look as authentic as possible, these bloggers can earn upwards of six-figures each year to feature, mention, or tag products in posts, so there’s no surprise these images are edited with a fine-toothed comb to appear flawless.

If you want to see all the work that really goes into these ‘effortless’ photos, or maybe learn a few trick yourself, take a look at Life With Me blogger Marianna Hewitt’s Youtube video that reveals all the photo-editing trade secrets. The video, which is over 10 minutes long, shows how to achieve the perfect selfie, which entails taking dozens of selfies, erasing stray hairs, adding dimension, and even making the eyes brighter.

Are you shocked by how much editing goes into one Instagram post? Let us know in the comments below!

Jaw-Dropping Images of Disney Princes in Real Life

The Disney movies we all grew up with have certainly set us up with high expectations of what love and our ‘prince charming’ should be like. These two-dimensional charmers taught us that you can fall in love with someone after singing a duet or dancing until midnight at a ball, but really everything about it is pretty unrealistic.

Thanks to Jirka Väätäinen, now we can see what those unrealistic princes would look like in the real world. Through a process of digital compositing, photo-manipulation, and digital painting, the artist reimagined some of our favorite princes like Prince Eric, Aladdin, and John Smith to show what they would look like in real life.

Trust us, these transformations are jaw-dropping.

Death is not the enemy gentlemen. If we’re going to fight a disease, let’s fight one of the most terrible diseases of all, indifference.” – Patch Adams, Patch Adams

Stunning Empire State Building Light Show Honors Endangered Animals

While the concrete jungle may not be known for its wildlife, one of its most famous skyscrapers honored over 100 of the world’s endangered animals, including Cecil the Lion, in a light show on Sat. August 1, 2015.

The event, Project Change: The Empire State Building, was intended to bring attention to the dwindling numbers of animals around the world as well as bring attention to Racing Extinction, a documentary created by the Oceanic Preservation Society.

The light show, which merged both art and activism, was created by Louie Psihoyos, executive director of Oceanic Preservation Society, and Travis Threlkel, a filmmaker and photographer.

Take a look at some highlights of the event below:

According to the New York Times, the project used 40 stacked, 20,000 lumen projectors and cost over $1 million in an effort to create “the most dramatic thing we could do to get the world to know about what we’re losing,” Psihoyos said.

The Shocking Moment a Man Finds a Dog Buried Alive

When Pedro Dinis took his own dog out for a walk on August 1 in Carrières-sur-Seine, a suburb just west of Paris, he made a shocking discovery. What looked like a dog sitting on dirt, turned out to be a 10-year-old French mastiff that had been abandoned and buried alive.

Dinis posted pictures of the dog on Facebook in order to raise more awareness about animal cruelty, and explained that when he found the dog “Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her.”

After realizing the dog was buried, Dinis immediately helped free the animal from the ground, and gave her fresh water.

After freeing the animal from the gravel and dirt, Dinis called emergency services and the dog was taken to a veterinary clinic. The dog’s life is no longer in danger, and she is said to make a full recovery.

The police were then able to locate the dog’s owner, who has been arrested in Carrières-sur-Seine, according to Le Parisien. The owner claimed the dog had escaped, but police found this theory to be highly improbable, as the dog is 10-years-old, and suffers from arthritis. The owner is said to be tried in March 2016 for animal cruelty and faces a two-year sentence as well as a $32,600 fine.

Can you believe that someone could be so cruel to this dog? Let us know in the comments below.

6 Things You Need to Understand About a Leo Before Dating One

Leos are known for their passion, and that zest for life is part of what makes a leo so attractive. We are intelligent, witty, and we command respect, yet we can also be extremely stubborn and dramatic. The one constant you should expect when dating a leo is that life will never be boring. As long as you can understand what makes us tick, you’ll be safe.

Here are six things you absolutely must understand before dating a leo:

6. We love to tease you.

To a leo, teasing is a sign of endearment. You can always tell if we like someone based on the amount we tease them. Teasing is a good thing, and if we’re not teasing you, it’s not a good sign. Try not to take these comments too seriously as we’re only trying to show affection.

5. We need space.

Leos are very independent, and are used to doing everything themselves. We have a hard time letting others into our alone time, so don’t be offended if your crush needs some space, especially in the beginning of a relationship. The key is to show interest without being clingy.

4. We can have big egos.

While we love to be independent and pride ourselves in being strong, we can also have big egos that are surprisingly fragile. Theres a fine line, but we need to feel independent without feeling neglected. Be sure to pay us compliments when deserved, and reassure us when we’re not feeling particularly confident. However being genuine is key as leos can spot a lie from a mile away, and false compliments will only make insult us.

3. We are sensitive.

Despite having big egos at times, we are actually quite sensitive and very attuned to tone. We might not tell you right away, but even the tiniest amount of disrespect or criticism will cut us to our core. In a disagreement it’s imperative to stay positive and calm. We always appreciate an apology, but can be to proud to accept it right away.

2. We are adventurous.

We love to be outdoors, exploring, and trying new things, so don’t take a leo on a typical (boring) date like dinner and a movie. Instead try to think of something creative, like going for a hike or maybe packing lunch for a sunset picnic. But be careful about activities where there will be a winner and a loser because leos have a competitive spirit, and are prone to being sore losers.

1. We are stubborn.

Of all the qualities you need to understand before dating a leo, our stubbornness is at the top of the list. We can be stubborn to a fault, and the more you try to push us to do something, the more we will resist. Our need to be independent can trump reason, and the sooner you learn this, the easier your life will be.

5 Ways You’re Unintentionally Making Yourself Miserable

$

Everywhere we turn, we’re bombarded with people and images telling and showing us how to be perfect.  The trick, however, is that perfection is impossible, yet we continue to look for the perfect partner, get the perfect job, or have the perfect body. In the process, we’re making our lives miserable.

Take a look at these five ways you’re accidentally making yourself unhappy because sometimes you just need to be reminded that everything doesn’t have to be perfect.

5. You expect people to read your mind.

We constantly set expectations for how we want our lives to be, yet we often neglect to communicate those expectations. This sets up a pattern of failure because, let’s face it, no one can read your mind. Whether you’re upset that you didn’t get the raise you wanted, or you’re annoyed that your friend didn’t call, it might be time to think about how well you are communicating what you want. If you aren’t communicating with others about what you want or need, it’s unfair to expect that others will know what you want.

Once you start communicating more openly with the people in your life, you’ll be amazed at how many frustrations will fade away.

4. You don’t trust yourself.

When faced with a tough decision do you usually ask others what to do? Most people ask their friends and family what to do, and while it’s completely normal to get input on a situation, the reality is everyone has motives and those motives might not align with your goals. Instead of feeling pressured and persuaded into something you know isn’t right, listen to your intuition. The more you trust yourself to make decisions the better in tune you’ll be with your intuition.

In every situation, you’re presented with decisions, and next time ask yourself which option brings you closer to achieving your goals.

3. You’re waiting for Prince Charming.

There’s a difference between having high standards and having impossible standards, and if you’re waiting around for Prince Charming to whisk you off your feet, you’ll be waiting a while. And while you’re waiting, you’ll have missed out on the incredibly kind, caring person just because they aren’t tall, tan, or successful.

You should never settle for someone who treats you poorly, but if you can’t seem to find a girlfriend/boyfriend it might be time to examine your expectations and stop blaming yourself for not attracting the perfect mate.

2. You freak out when things don’t go according to plan.

Things have a way of going wrong at the worst possible times, but it’s important to recognize that you have no control over those things. What you do have control over is how you handle those situations. Sure it’s natural to get upset, but if you let car braking down or waking up with a pimple on your forehead ruin your day, you’ll never be happy.

Once you accept that life doesn’t look like an Instagram feed, you’ll feel liberated and maybe you’ll even be able to find the humor in these daily annoyances.

1. You expect your body to be perfect.

All too often we set unrealistic goals for how our bodies should look. We think that these ‘imperfections’ stand in the way of loving ourselves, but really we’re the only thing in the way. Even if you do manage to lose those last 10 pounds, it won’t be long until you fund other things to fix. Once you come to terms with the fact that your body will never be ‘perfect’, you can stop making yourself hate your body and start appreciating all the incredible things your body does for you.

Are you accidentally making any of these mistakes in your life?

In our world of technology, social media, and constant stimulation, it’s nice to be reminded that Mother Nature still reigns supreme, and the bi-annual migration of the golden ray does just that. The golden ray, otherwise known as the cow-nosed ray, is a species of stingray that migrates in packs (or ‘fevers’) of 10,000 twice a year between Western Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula.

The ‘natural’ makeup look has been scene on all of the biggest runways around the world in recent seasons, yet despite it’s name, the look still requires some primping to make skin appear fresh and hide any imperfections. To show you just how much makeup it takes to achieve this look in one year, Dutch artist duo Lernert Engelberts and Sander Plug applied 365 layers of makeup on model Hannelore Knuts.

“We wanted to apply 365 layers of makeup in one day to see how much is needed to go from a natural look to an outrageous one,” the duo explained.

The entire process took nine non-stop hours to apply every layer on the Belgian model’s face.

Knuts sat fixed between the two white panels for the entirety of the shoot, and could only eat during breaks through a straw.

“We tested a 100-layer session a few days before on our intern, who is a man. We wanted to make sure that this amount of makeup wouldn’t kill a person. It didn’t kill our intern so we trusted everything would be fine on Hannelore.” Engelberts and Plug said.

This Image shows the shoot not even half-way through. The entire process took seven bottles of foundation, two bottles of eye makeup, three lip pens, and two bottles of blush. That’s 228.4 ml of makeup all together.
