While bringing a child into the world is a priceless experience for parents, it’s also the start of an expensive lifelong commitment that begins the second the baby is born.
And even though one Utah dad knew giving birth wasn’t cheap, he was stunned when he looked at the hospital bill and saw that the hospital had actually charged them $39.35 for holding their own son after the delivery. “During the C-section the nurse asked my wife if she would like to do skin to skin after the baby was born. Which of course anyone would say yes to…,” new dad Ryan Grassley wrote in a post to Reddit.
“The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife’s neck/chest. Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us…We just noticed it in the bill today and had a laugh,” the now father-of-two wrote.
While Grassley was amused by the unusual bill, many online commenters were furious at the hospital. Many saw the charge as unwarranted, however, a nurse saw the post and explained that “‘skin to skin’ in the OR is a relatively new thing and requires a second Labor and Delivery RN to come into the OR and make sure the baby is safe.”
