After being pushed into a small crack in a cement wall by a monster, a tiny puppy was understandably too terrified to fight her way out. However, she quickly grew too big to fit back through the hole and had no choice but to waste away in the dark cavity.
Yet before she starved to death, locals from Russian city Khabarovsk heard the terrified dog’s cries and made sure to feed her every day. “Residents had made attempts over the years to lure the dog out of the hole, and pull her free, but she was too frightened, and retreated out of reach,” one local news site explained.
Locals contacted emergency services but they refused to do anything about the dog, however, when winter hit the town and the temperature dropped to -22 degrees, they knew they had to do something to rescue her. Some local animal rights activists came together and started planning a rescue, however, when they drilled the wall to make the hole bigger, the dog who they later named Volya, meaning Freedom, refused to come out.
Activist Darya Stepantsova volunteered to squeeze through the hole and hoped to gently pull the dog out. “But when got there, I was shocked – for years the dog had dug tunnels there,” she told The Siberian Times. “At first I thought it was unreal to catch her. She was hiding there and I could not get in, so I had to literally dig trenches to try and get her out. I crawled closer to the dog, threw a loop over her head, and tied her muzzle with a bandage.”
The team finally managed to pull Volya out of the wall, and had her treated by a vet, who was amazed to see that she was healthy despite everything she’d been through. Volya is still scared of bright light, people, and open spaces, but the team is hopeful that she will adjust to her new life in an actual home.
