Over their years of service, police officers respond to some shocking and strange calls, but even a group of long-standing men and women in uniform were shocked when they responded to a home invasion call and discovered the culprit.

After receiving a call from a terrified young man about a break-in, police officers from California’s Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office made their way over to the 18-year-old’s house. According to the young man, all of his dogs began barking hysterically, which usually meant something was wrong, but he knew someone had broken into the house when he heard strange noises.

The young man quickly gathered up his dogs and barricaded himself and the pets in a room to keep safe from the intruder, awaiting the police’s arrival. “We came out and he’s all afraid, thinking there’s a prowler in his house,” said Spencer Crum, the department spokesperson. “Several deputies arrived and went in the house, a couple of others stayed outside to search the exterior.”

“One of the deputies outside the house heard this scratching noise,” Crum said. “He shined his light around the house and saw this dog sticking his head out a skylight on the roof. At that point, we ditched all tactics and died laughing.”

In the panic, the man didn’t realize his Great Dane wasn’t barricaded in the room with him. Instead, the ‘intruder‘ was upstairs peaking out of the skylight enjoying the cool air.

“Apparently, the smaller dogs had been freaking out because they couldn’t get up there,” Crum said. “I’ve done this job for 25 years, and there’s been a lot of strange calls. A dog being mistaken for an intruder in his own home? That’s pretty abnormal.”
