While out on a hike with his family, one Canadian man spotted a furry newborn puppy on the ground. And when he looked closer, he realized the abandoned pup, who hadn’t even opened its eyes yet, was sick and would die without help.
“We needed to get it attended to because we don’t have that capability. I’m not a mommy,” said Ralph Shopland, who found the injured pup. They carefully picked the one-week-old up, carried it to the car, and went straight to the vet for a check-up to see what could be done to nurse him back to health.
Yet when the team from the Yukon Wildlife Preserve took a look at the abandoned pup, they realized the baby wasn’t actually a dog. “I just defaulted to thinking it was a dog,” Shopland said. The team won’t know for sure if the baby is an otter, marten, wolverine, or fox until he gets older, but are confident that he’s a fox because of the white tip at the end of his tail.
While Shopland saved this baby, whose mom most likely was hit by a car, he will live the rest of his life in captivity, which is why conservation officers are warning other to never pick up or approach baby wild animals. “If you think you’ve found orphaned wildlife, in most cases mother is very close by and just waiting for you to leave,” said Yukon conservation officer Dave Bakica. “We try to tell people, please do not pick up any orphaned wildlife.”
