Parents with small children have a lot on their plate, and no one knows that better than fellow parents, however, they can’t even defend one Texas mom whose mistake could have cost children their lives.
While a First-grade teacher from Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet School was looking in her students’ bags at the end of Monday afternoon to make sure all of her students had everything they needed for homework that night, she was stunned when she found a loaded gun in one of her student’s backpacks.
The teacher immediately reported her finding to a school resource officer, who determined that the six-year-old had no plans on using the weapon or harming anyone, and had no idea it was even in her bag. And when the school contacted the girl’s mom, she explained that she had put the gun in the girl’s bag over the weekend because she didn’t want it in the house, but forgot all about it by Monday.
Word quickly spread around the school by Monday afternoon, and the school then sent letters home to all the parents to explain the incident. And while the mother insisted it was all a mistake, many parents think her excuse is unacceptable. “I think about all the kids who were put in danger because anything could’ve happened. I’m fearful right now,” said grandmother Tina Tatum.
“It’s really bothering me,” fellow parent Wyndie Badaway said. “Parents need to be able to more careful with their guns and what they are doing and it never should have gone in a backpack.”
