At just a few weeks old, puppies rely on their human owners for everything from protection and food to love and affection, which is why one animal control officer was heartbroken by the state he found a Shih Tzu-poodle dog.
After two witnesses called Officer John DeCando from the Paterson Animal Control and reported seeing a woman toss a lump of fur out of her moving car, he decided to get to the scene to see for himself. Once he got there, DeCando realized that the lump of fur was a starving dog covered in thick, matted hair. “The dog was thrown out like yesterday’s garbage,” DeCando said.
“This emaciated, sweet Shih Tzu was barely recognizable under a coating of thick, filthy fur. He was unable to walk. His mats wrapped around his head and limbs like a mummy. He had mats at least 3 inches deep over his eyes, and the smell of urine and feces was overwhelming,” the animal control team explained.
Despite being too weak to walk, the sweet dog, who the team named Grant, dragged himself over to the officers and showered them with kisses when he realized he was safe.
The officers immediately rushed Grant to an animal hospital, but only realized the extent of his abuse after shaving 10 pounds of fur off of his 6-pound body. “This is something that we’re not going to tolerate,” said DeCando, who is now searching for the monster responsible for Grant’s abuse. “Grant remains loving – his faith in people remains steady as ours diminishes.”
