Dogs like to eat just about anything they can get in their mouths, which is why veterinarians barely bat an eye when they have to pull out random objects from their stomachs.
So when one family brought in their four-month-old puppy and explained that their pet had swallowed something, one veterinarian from the UK thought it was going to be just like any other case. However, when Doctor Ben Garland took an x-ray of the puppy, he was stunned when it revealed the dog had swallowed an 18-inch metal rod.
“I’ve removed a lot of things from dogs’ stomachs, but nothing quite as spectacular as this,” Dr. Garland said. The family explained that they had let the Labrador Retriever pup out to play in the garden, but rushed him to the vet when they realized he had swallowed the rod of a garden windmill.
“He’d chewed the sails off and had somehow been able to swallow the remainder. He was OK – a little bit dribbly but otherwise fine,” Dr. Garland explained. “He didn’t appear to be in much pain, just a little bit bewildered.”
The puppy was rushed into emergency surgery, and for 45 minutes, Dr. Garland cut into his esophagus and carefully removed the 18-inch pole. He was then kept with the vet for 48 hours while he recovered, and has since been sent home with his family. “They had been concerned and were very relieved to see him,” said Dr. Garland. “Thankfully it didn’t cause any other damage, and he now seems to be well on the road to recovery.”
