For the first 13 months after Jadon and Anias McDonald were born, they did absolutely everything together. However, these twins never even knew what the other looked like because they were born conjoined at the head.

In October, Jadon and Anias underwent a dangerous 27-hour surgery that cost $2.5 million at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Centre in New York to separate their heads and hopefully give them a chance at having normal lives.

Miraculously, the two boys both survived the surgery, which could have killed them or left them with developmental complications. Jadon and Anias have both experienced infections, fevers, and seizures, but they are breaking records with their quick recovery.

Before Anias and Jadon, the record for recovery time was eight weeks, but the twins are set to be moved to a rehab center at just six weeks after surgery. “Historically, this will be the fastest (recovery),” their surgeon Dr. James Goodrich said.

Just weeks after the surgery, mom Nicole even got to hold Jadon for the very first time. “For over 13 months, I’ve dreamed of this moment,” she said. “I looked down at Jadon’s angelic face and saw him in a way I’d never seen him before… instead of wrapping my body around him in his bed, I wrapped my arms around him and rocked. One of the most profound moments of my life.”

Anias, on the other hand, is having more setbacks with seizures and infections, but doctors expected it since he had breathing issues, seizures, and heart problems before the surgery. To help his recovery, doctors decided to introduce the two boys and let them see each other for the first time. “It’s the most amazing thing. I just can’t even believe it,” Nicole said about her boys, whose jaws both dropped open when they laid eyes on the other.
