A good parent stands by their child no matter what and will stand by their child when no one else will.

That’s exactly why one Virginia couple is fighting back after their toddler was kicked out of his daycare for wearing a dress.

Kristen Johnson and Robin Crabb’s four-year-old son had been wearing his favorite dress to daycare for weeks without a problem, however, when Johnson showed up to pick her son up from daycare one afternoon, she realized he wasn’t wearing his dress anymore. At first, she assumed he had gotten it dirty, but her then 3-year-old explained it had been taken off of him.

“A teacher said [the owner] was irate when she saw my son wearing a dress,” Johnson said. “My son was essentially kicked out because he was wearing a dress… I said no one should take my son’s clothes off until they talk to my husband or myself first.” Johnson tried to understand why her son’s dress had been taken off, but the staff refused to respond and only said she would have to talk to the daycare’s owner.

Later that night, the owner called Johnson and told her that her son’s dress broke dress codes that banned long dressed, but Johnson believes her son has been discriminated against since the rule is extremely vague and other girls regularly wear longer dresses to class. And after further discussion about the matter, the owner then kicked the boy out of the daycare because of the incident.

Now, Johnson and Crabb are sharing their story to advocate for their son. “We don’t know what’s going to happen, he’s four. But after this he had shame about wearing a dress, he would talk about it,” she said. “I think that’s insane that in this progressive area a daycare could do that to a child.” Johnson’s son was then ashamed of his dress and stopped wearing it until the director at his new daycare center told him it was fine if he wanted to wear his dress. “That’s all he needed, to know that it was okay. He had been empowered to wear it. And other kids in the class said they liked the dress.”

“There’s such a high rate of suicide for transgender kids,” Johnson said. “I know the possible harms [the daycare’s] actions could have done to our son. That’s why we are so passionate about having more education and having other members of the community know this happened. They need to know they have recourse to fight it because it’s not okay.”
