The holidays are meant to be a time for spending quality time with friends and loved ones, which is why it can be an especially hard time of year for those whose loved ones are far away.
And for one Ohio 12-year-old, the holiday season was just another reminder that his mom Petty Officer Julie Workman had been absent from his life for a year as she served in the Middle East. Dylan didn’t know that his mom had actually been planning a surprise reunion just in time for the holidays.
Dylan had been out with his aunt Jessica Workman, who works at the local mall and helped plan the surprise when she asked if he would take a photo with Santa. And as he sat and posed with Santa, Julie suddenly appeared by his side. “She had mentioned she wanted to a surprise and I’m a fan of those homecoming surprises as much as anyone else, so I was like okay let’s do it,” Jessica said.
“I didn’t know what to do, and whether I should wait for the picture to be over and then give her a hug, but I just jumped up and gave her a hug,” Dylan said about the moment that left him stunned. “It’s the best present I could ask for.”
