Usually, when it’s time for dogs to go home after spending the day with a sitter or dog walker, they can’t contain their excitement since they get to go home and be with their family.
But when Lisa Heart, a volunteer at Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Northeast, would start driving a sweet German Shepherd named Ham home after their outings together, she noticed he would always cry and found out it was because his family kept him all alone in their empty second home because they didn’t want him.
“He just sits in the front to watch people go by,” Heart said about the dog desperate for companionship. Heart decided to spread Ham’s story to help him find a forever home, and about a week later, Neil Abramson and his wife Amy Rodriguez reached out to adopt Ham. “You see a lot of stories about dogs and places that I can’t get to — the West Coast or South America or in different countries,” said Abramson, an author and esteemed animal welfare attorney. “And then I looked and said, ‘Holy crap. This dog’s in White Plains. I mean this dog is like 20 minutes from where I live.'”
Heart brought Ham to his new home this past weekend, and when they arrived at his new home, she knew it would be a perfect fit since Abramson and Rodriguez, a veterinarian, have already rescued a horse, dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, rabbits, parrots, and a tortoise.
Ham was thrilled with his new home, but he couldn’t help but think that it was too good to be true. “He would wake up every 30 minutes to make sure everything was the same,” Abramson said. “I hope that eventually, he wakes up every two hours or every four hours. And then he will wake up when everybody else does and know that this is his life now. And he doesn’t have to worry about it being taken away.”
