The brave men and women who serve in the armed forces know how incredibly dangerous their jobs are, and are prepared to sacrifice everything for others.
So when John Peck was serving in Iraq in the Marines, he wasn’t deterred when his vehicle hit an IED and suffered from a traumatic brain injury. Once healed and cleared for duty, Peck went back and served in Afghanistan. However, his career in the Military ended in 2010 when he stepped on another homemade bomb and lost all four of his limbs.
But in August 2014, Peck was approved to undergo a double arm transplant and began waiting to hear from doctors if there was a donor. After two years, the wait was finally over. “As soon as Dr Talbot called me, I knew, and I just broke down. I was crying because I was happy. But then my mind switched and it became… I mean, somebody died. I just want [the donor family] to know that this gift, it’s not going to go to waste at all,” said Peck, who underwent the successful 14-hour surgery four months ago.
“I wanted to move forward with my life,’ Peck said after the surgery. “It’s kind of been on a time-out right now.” Doctors are expecting his rehabilitation to take about 12 months, but the 31-year-old, who proposed to his girlfriend after the surgery, is starting to live his life again and is already seeing great progress.
“I loved them the minute I looked at them,” he said. “I looked down, it seemed natural. It was just a perfect match. The skin color is a perfect match, the size – of course I had swelling but the size is a perfect match. Everything was just perfect.” Just months after surgery, Peck has shared a video of his progress and is seen sliding his arm back and forth with his physiotherapist.
