A dog isn’t just a pet, a dog becomes a beloved member of the family. And when they pass away, it can be just as traumatic and painful as when any other family member dies.

And when Philadelphia-based couple Nick Franco and Kari MacDonald’s beloved dog passed away last March, they were completely devastated. “We were really not wanting to open our hearts and bring another dog in full-time,” Franco said. “It was just too soon.”

The couple wasn’t ready for a new dog, but when they heard a pit bull named Benny from the Pennsylvania SPCA was in need of a foster home, they decided they could temporarily open their home and their hearts so he wouldn’t have to wait for his forever home in a shelter.

“We both fell in love with him pretty quickly — second or third day,” Franco said about the 3-year-old, who had been raised in an abusive and illegal fighting operation. “We were already teetering on the edge of adopting him.” But the couple knew they had to make Benny a permanent part of their lives when he saved them from a burglar.

Recently, the couple took Benny on a shopping trip and noticed he was acting a little strange and was pulling on the leash more than normal when they got home. “We noticed some things were in disarray, but our first thought was we knocked something over as we were leaving,” said Franco, who couldn’t figure out why Benny was sniffing the floor, pacing around the house, and was growling. “As this is happening, I looked around and realized we had been burglarized.”

However, they realized the intruder was still in their house when they heard the floor creak upstairs. “Get out of my house right now. My dog is going to come upstairs. He’s not happy,” Franco yelled up. Thankfully, the threat was enough to scare the burglar, who left the stolen items and disappeared after jumping out a window. “It just clicked at that moment,” Franco said. “There was no way we were not going to adopt him.”
