People who foster shelter animals voluntarily dedicate all of their extra time, energy, and often their money to care for unwanted, abused, or neglected animals.

Shelters trust and depend on these animal lovers to care for their animals, which is why one Georgia rescue organization was horrified when they discovered a woman who volunteered to foster a dog had actually been abusing and neglecting the poor animal.

“For it to be one of our own, is devastating because you would never expect that from someone who makes a living taking care of animals.  It’s just unreal,” said Justine Stinnett, who works at a dog rescue organization and placed the adult boxer-mix named Lucky in what she thought was a perfect foster home on November 11.

When Stinnett dropped Lucky off, he was a healthy, strong 50-pound dog. And at first, the foster mom named Ashley sent updates showing how happy Lucky was in his new foster home. But Stinnett started getting concerned when the updates slowed down, and knew she had to check on Lucky when he missed an appointment at the vet.

When she arrived at the foster home, she discovered Lucky, who was now severely emaciated, locked in a small crate and left outside in the rain. Stinnett believes Ashley left her home two weeks ago, and intentionally left behind Lucky and another elderly blind dog that she had been caring for.

The dogs were in bad shape, but they were luckily rescued just in time, and are expected to make a full recovery. “Angry.  Sad.  I don’t know if I have all the words for it because it makes me boil just thinking about how a dog could become like this,” said Dr Lexie Mahn about Lucky, who must have been starved for weeks to be so thin.

“You had him for a month a 4 days. I trusted you… we all trusted you,” Stinnett wrote in a post on her Facebook to the pet sitter. “You took a young, healthy, beautiful dog, and you broke him. You tortured him along with an older blind dog. They were defenseless. If you didn’t want them anymore all you had to do was say so. One call and I would have been there. Lucky and Simpson may not have a voice. But on behalf of them and the army behind standing behind them…. F**k you.” So far, Ashley, who also works as a babysitter, has not been charged, but is being investigated by Cobb County Animal Control.
