The best kinds of Christmas presents are the ones that come from the heart and make the recipient feel overjoyed, so it’s safe to say one Notre Dame basketball player just received the best Christmas gift ever.

This past Monday, Matt Farrell was playing with his Notre Dame teammates, and as a surprise, he was greeted with a suprise video message after their win from his brother, Lieutenant Bo Farrell, who has been deployed in Afghanistan. In the video, Bo spoke about how proud he was of his brother and how he was looking forward to being reunited in February.

Matt was clearly touched by his brother’s video, but he was about to learn that it wasn’t his brother’s last surprise. Right after the video finished, Matt burst into tears when he spotted Bo walking out onto the court from the locker room. “He got me,” said Matt. “We don’t ask for much for Christmas, so this is the best present I’ve ever gotten.”

And Matt wasn’t the only one stunned by Bo’s arrival. His parents had no idea that Bo, his grandmother, and basketball coach Mike Brey had been planning the surprise for weeks. “He is very upset with me,” Brey said jokingly after Matt realized he helped plan the surprise. “What a neat family celebration.”
