Every girl dreams of how magical her wedding day will be, and in those dreams, the bride always has her mother standing right by her side.
And even though 55-year-old Cheryl Owens was diagnosed with kidney cancer in October of last year, she seemed to be doing well and with only a month left before daughter Kristin Ownes was set to be married, the family was confident she’d make it to the big day.
Unfortunately, Cheryl’s condition took a turn for the worse last Sunday when she was rushed to the hospital and doctors discovered that her cancer had progressed and treatment would no longer help her. Kristin told the doctor that her wedding was just a month away, but he didn’t think she had that much time. “And he just kind of gave me that look, and I said, ‘Okay, is there something we can do here?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, we have a program.’”
The hospital staff heard about the plan and in just six hours, they planned the entire wedding for the couple and got more than forty family members and friends to arrive in time for the emotional ceremony. “Tonight, we are very proud of our IU Health West Hospital ICU team, who pulled off an amazing whirlwind wedding,” said the hospital in a Facebook post.
“My mom is amazing…so there’s something very therapeutic about this. When I saw the Facebook post and how many people posted, it’s kind of comforting, knowing now that everyone is going to see how amazing she is. And the staff that had not even known her for 48 hours bent over backward to have this wedding for her and I think that just shows the kind of person she is, the legacy that she’s going to leave, it just means a lot,” said Kristin.
