After giving birth to a premature baby, many parents spend weeks and sometimes even months waiting until the day they’re allowed to bring their baby home.
Danielle Bills is no different; only she’s beeing waiting three years to bring her baby boy home for the first time finally.
Bills, a mother-of-two who gave birth to her youngest son at just 27 weeks, suffered from preeclampsia while pregnant, and was forced to give birth to baby Clifford extremely prematurely.
Clifford survived the birth, but was born with severe lung disease because of it, and has had to stay in the hospital this entire time for treatment. “You may see children who spend from four to either months in the hospital for the same thing but Clifford’s lung disease was so severe which has caused his prolonged hospital stay,” said nurse practitioner Robin Kingston.
The prolonged hospital stay has been tough on both Clifford and his mom, who spent almost every day driving back and forth to the hospital. And while the road ahead will still be challenging, Clifford is finally strong enough to go home. “He gets multiple medications which he’ll need long term and because of the prolonged hospital stay he’s severely developmentally delayed,” said Kingston.
For now, Bills and her family are focusing on celebrating this huge milestone and were even thrown a going away party by the many nurses and doctors who helped Clifford during his hospital stay.
