Finding out you’re expecting quadruplets would give anyone anxiety, since raising four kids is a huge financial commitment. One Kentucky mom had, even more, to worry about when she discovered her cancer had returned about half way through the pregnancy.
Mom-of-six Kayla Gaytan was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2016 just days after marrying military police officer Sgt. Charles Gaytan. After months of chemotherapy, Gaytan’s cancer went into remission in May, however, because of the treatment, doctors told her she would be able to have more kids.
A month later, Gaytan found out she was pregnant with four miracle babies. “I called my husband to tell him, and he couldn’t believe it,” Gaytan said. “He thought he had misheard me.” Tragically, doctors discovered Gaytan’s cancer returned in December. “With four babies on the way, I just couldn’t wrap my head around how it could come back. I thought I had beat it the first time.”
To give both the babies and Gaytan the best chance of survival, the quadruplets were delivered via C-section at 30 weeks so Gaytan could start treatment. “They say I have a 50 percent chance of being here within the next five years,” she says. “But I don’t have a choice but to fight. I have an amazing husband and family that need me.”
Because of the financial strain of raising six kids and paying for hospital bills for her cancer, the family started a GoFundMe page to raise $5,000. However, people were so moved by Gaytan’s story that generous strangers have donated over $1 million.
“Five to six minutes after we went on, the page just took off,” said Gaytan, who plans to use to money for medical expenses and care for the newborns who are still in the NICU. “We’re just in shock because we never expected this. We’re not sure what costs we’ll incur once they come home, but this will help. It’s a great little nest egg.”
“From the bottom of our hearts our family has truly been humbled and amazed by the kindness of people,” Gaytan said. “It renews my faith in humanity. To know that people that don’t even know us just wanted to help our family is amazing.”
