Most people describe the moment they meet their significant other as one of the best moments in their life. However, for one woman, the moment she met her fiancé happened to be the worst time in her life.

On April 15, 2013, Roseann Sdoia was watching runners just before they crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon when she was suddenly hit with shrapnel from pressure-cooker bombs. Boston firefighter Mike Materia saw her get injured, helped keep her calm, and even went to the hospital with her.

In the days that followed, Materia visited Sdoia in the hospital and they quickly became friends. “In the hospital, my mom tried to set me up with him,” Sdoia said. “She was like, ‘Oh, did you see that firefighter? He’s so cute.’ And I was like, ‘Mom, I just got blown up.'”

Sdoia had to have her leg amputated and Materia helped her practice walking, helped her find a prosthetic leg, and sat with her for hours during doctor’s appointments. “I knew I was starting to have feelings for him because he was so kind and caring,” Sdoia said. “And he has an unbelievable smile.” By that June, the two went on their first date and just got engaged this past December.

“He’s seen me on my worst day,” said Sdoia, who will marry Materia sometime in late Fall. “I do feel that, in a sense, some things happen for a reason.”
