Rescuers are used to finding animals at their worst because of abuse, neglect, or injury. Usually, however, the animal isn’t in such bad shape that they can’t even tell what they’re trying to help.
Yet when a good samaritan spotted a small animal covered in matted fur wandering near a park and dropped it off at a nearby vet, no one could figure out what kind of animal they were dealing with since the fur almost completely covered its face, body, and legs.
“The coat was so bad that the only option we had was to shave it all off. Once we’d removed the fur, it revealed a number of sores and wounds to her skin,” Campbell said. Once all the hair was shaved off, the team also realized that the animal was actually a small Shih Tzu and named her Rosie.
“Rosie has clearly been severely neglected and was in a terrible state when we got her,” RSPCA inspector Lorna Campbell said. “You could barely tell she was a dog let alone what breed she was – she just looked like a dirty mop. Her coat was a horrible brown/gray color when it should have been a beautiful cream and she had huge matted knots and dreadlocks in her coat which had made her skin sore and bleeding.”
“Vets believe her coat has been left to grow for a considerable length of time. Poor Rosie must have been so uncomfortable,” said Campbell. Thankfully, Rosie was finally freed from her matted fur and could finally get the treatment she desperately needed for all of her wounds and sores.
