No parent should know what it’s like to watch helplessly as their child’s heart stops beating, but one UK couple knows too well how terrifying it is since they’ve experienced it ten times in just four short years.
Four years ago, mom Charmaine gave birth to her second child, Romeo Weiss, and could instantly tell something wasn’t right since his skin was tinted blue. Doctors discovered that baby Romeo was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which meant he only had half a heart and was only two days old when he had to undergo his first surgery.
Since his birth, Romeo has had three open heart surgeries, ten other operations, and recently had his tenth heart attack. “To see his heart stop ten times is terrible,” Charmaine said. Yet the 28-year-old’s ‘little soldier’ has survived everything thanks to his determination and his amazing doctors, who have brought him back every time.“We’ve thought we were going to lose him so many times,” Charmaine said.“He’s such a fighter. He’s always managed to pull through somehow.”
Despite how challenging the past few years have been, Charmaine knows that Romeo wouldn’t be here without his doctors. And while he may need a heart transplant when he’s older, Romeo is finally more stable and getting to enjoy his childhood. “Now he looks much healthier. It’s wonderful to see him running around, though he tires easily. He loves going to school,” Charmaine said.
“He’s such a little soldier. He may only have half a heart, but he’s the heart of our family. He’s a very special little boy.”
