Firefighters have just seconds to find the source of the problems when they arrive at the scene, come up with a plan, and put that plan into effect in order to save lives.
Recently, a fire broke out in an apartment in Xiangyang, China while the homeowner was cooking dinner. Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after, made their way up seven flights of stairs to the apartment, and discovered that the source of the fire was a gas tank that was leaking.
The team tried to turn the gas off, but the valve was broken. Firefighter Wan Wentao knew that if the leak wasn’t controlled, it would cause a dangerous explosion and desperately tried to put the fire out with a wet cloth and bed sheet. When that failed to put the fire out, he knew he had to somehow get the gas tank out of the building.
“I was only worried that the gas tank might explode. So I just wanted to move it out of the way immediately,” said Wan, who picked up the 22-pound tank and carefully ran down the stairs and outside before it could explode. Once outside, the team cooled the tank and covered it with water to dilute the gas, which thankfully stopped it from exploding.
“I saw him running down with the burning gas tank. The flame was so strong. They risked their lives for us, it is amazing,” one resident said. “I love this job, it makes my life full of passion, trust and support from community residents also makes me feel proud,” Wan said.
