When most expecting parents go to the hospital to welcome their baby into the world, they can’t help but imagine the moment they get to go home together and start their lives as a family.
Yet when 31-year-old Tanedra DuBose went in to give birth at just 30 weeks, she was facing the very real possibility that she wouldn’t survive the birth after doctors told her she had just a 30-40% chance of survival. “At the same time, I’m trying to process this, I’m also given paperwork to sign to say, ‘Hey, in the event you don’t make it, we need someone to make decisions and care for your daughter.’”
DuBose was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in May 2015, which meant that if she ever wanted to have a family, it would be incredibly dangerous. Despite her heart condition, DuBose and her childhood sweetheart decided to have a baby the next year.
To keep her healthy, doctors monitored the expecting mom’s health closely and determined she would have to have an emergency C-section at only 30-weeks along when her heart started to deteriorate quickly. During the birth, DuBose started slipping away and remembers struggling to breathe, but was miraculously revived by the sound of her daughter’s cry.
“She gasped for air and it felt like we both took in the same air. It was the most beautiful sound. They brought her up to me and I gave her a kiss. After that, I couldn’t actually believe I was alive. It was so surreal…It was like a second wind. It was like the fight began.”
“She weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces,” DuBose said about baby Savannah, who was taken straight to the NICU. However, a few weeks later, both mom and baby are doing well and were just released from the hospital.
