Daycare workers are responsible for taking care of other people’s children and keeping them safe while in their care, and it’s a responsibility one Philidelphia daycare owner takes very seriously.
So when Sereda Thompson, the owner of the Works of Learning Early Day Care in West Philadelphia, noticed a three-year-old was chewing on something before snack time her instincts kicked in and she immediately went over to investigate since they hadn’t handed out any food yet.
Thompson reached into the toddler’s mouth and was horrified when she pulled out a small bag with a mysterious substance inside. She wasn’t sure what it was, but didn’t want to take any chances. Thompson rushed the girl to the closest hospital, where doctors determined that the girl had been chewing on crack cocaine, which they believe the toddler picked up off the street.
Luckily, the little girl was brought to the hospital just in time before any harm was done. “For a substance like that to be in a child I know, that’s very disheartening,” Thompson said. “I would never want any child to experience anything like that.”
