Pit bulls still have an unfortunate reputation for being aggressive, violent, and dangerous in our society. So when a young boy and his mother were found with bite marks, the local police automatically assumed their pet pit bull had attacked them.
However, police have just discovered that the dog isn’t dangerous, but a brave hero. Last week, an Australian mother, whose identity cannot be released, had brought her nine-year-old and 5-year-old sons down to the Murray River where she forced them to go under water and tried to drown them both.
Tragically, the five-year-old boy drowned while his mother held him beneath the surface, but the older son managed to pull free and tried to escape up the river. Buddy the pit bull was nearby and raced over when he heard the struggle and dragged the boy out of the water and defended him from his mother.
“Buddy doesn’t have a history of being a dangerous dog and most certainly hasn’t ever bitten anyone and has never been seized before for anything,” his owner said in a petition after the police wrongly assumed Buddy had attacked the family and threatened to put him down. “Buddy is a member of our family and has grown up around children his whole life and has been the most gentlest dog, he has clearly seen a child in distress and attempted to help, dogs don’t have hands to help like us humans they have to use their teeth and in doing so it’s being portrayed as this dog has attacked the young boy.”
Incredibly, over 50,000 people signed the petition to save Buddy, including the 9-year-old’s grandfather. “I own a similar dog and I know he was trying to save the boys, it’s their nature when they are raised with kids. Let the ones who his actions affected decide. I have one grandson left because this brave dog took action as required,” the boy’s grandfather said about Buddy. Since then, he has now returned home while the mother faces murder and attempted murder charges.
