A mother would do anything to protect her child from danger. That’s why when one South African newborn’s life and eyesight hung in the balance, a brave young mother was ready to do anything to keep her baby safe.

This past week, the South African mother, who’s in her early 20s, had just finished breastfeeding her one-month-old baby and set her down for a moment on the couch in their home. She glanced back and realized that her baby wasn’t alone on the couch.

A nearly 40-inch-long Mozambique spitting cobra, which is one of the most dangerous snakes in Africa, was on the couch and was slithering closer to her baby.

“A Mozambique Spitting Cobra is very a common snake in Africa, with potent venom. The species accounts for many snake bites and for that reason, it is considered one of the most dangerous snakes in Africa,” said snake expert Zam Paulik.

The mother knew the venom would likely kill her tiny baby, so she didn’t hesitate to grab her baby off the couch as quickly as possible. However, as she grabbed her baby, the snake spat venom into her eyes.

“Venom being ‘spat’ in the eyes will cause an immediate stinging sensation and in severe cases, possible blindness. One’s eyes should be washed out immediately with large quantities of water,” Paulik said.

The woman screamed out for help, and thankfully an ambulance arrived shortly after and was able to stabilize her and rush her to the hospital.
