As a kid, Lauren Puryear was always taught to help others in need, so last year the then 29-year-old mom of one decided to challenge herself and see if she could feed 30,000 people in need before turning 30.
“[My grandmother] always taught us to help other people and to love other people,” Lauren said. “I know that she would want me to carry on her legacy.” While feeding 30,000 people seems impossible to most, Lauren knew she could achieve her goal with the help of extreme couponing.
“After I couponed for 50 jars of Ragu sauce and 100 boxes of Barilla pasta all for free, I knew I was going to make a difference in the world,” she said. Lauren started her project by delivering 5,000 meals to people in New Jersey, Washington D.C., and Baltimore last year, and started expanding the project after seeing how successful she was. Since starting the project, Lauren has already reached her goal and has fed 30,000 people even though her birthday isn’t until September 2017.
“I will keep on feeding until [my 30th birthday] and see what number I can get up to. Maybe 300,000!” said Lauren, who started an organization called For the Love of Others after seeing how her project was helping people. “We were also providing meals for the everyday working American who is living at or below the poverty line,” she said. “I am starting a new initiative called Push Past Poverty, where I will aim to educate those in need on how to rise above the poverty line by utilizing community resources, coupons and other tools.”
While some are calling Lauren a superhero, she just sees it as a way of continuing her family legacy, which her six-year-old has happily embraced as well. “He’s really grown into such a little humanitarian,” she said. “I hope he’ll continue to help others throughout his life however he sees fit. He also learned how to coupon, which he loves.”
