After a tragic car accident left one California 7-year-old paralyzed from the waist down, doctors told him and his family that he would never walk again and never regain feeling.
“Doctors were telling us there’s no chance of recovery, there’s no chance of sensation, or even the hope of movement at all,” mom Lyhoy Mansy said about the moment doctors told her that her son Bruce would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
For months after the September accident, Bruce was understandably crushed after being told there was no hope. “Sometimes we catch him staring off into the distance, daydreaming a bit when he sees other children playing.” But then the family found Project Walk, a physical therapy program that helps people with spinal cord injuries.
“They are an answer to our prayers because they specialize in spinal cord injuries and work with patients to strengthen the body functions below the injury level. The challenge is the program is expensive, not covered by the insurance,” said the family, who has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to afford Project Walk, which has already improved Bruce’s condition.
since starting therapy, Bruce has been working hard to be able to dance, and with a little help from a harness, he’s finally started dancing again. “Seeing him be able to move again with his dance rhythm even though he’s still on a harness, it’s very encouraging because he’s happy again,” Lyhoy said. “He’s able to move and dance in a way where it’s different, but he’s still expressing himself.”
