Mike and Lauren Whiteley were in for the shock of their lives when they found out that they were expecting triplets instead of the baby girl they had hoped for. While the number came as a shock to the couple, what surprised doctors even more was the fact that these triplets were identical, which only occurs once in every million births.
“The fact that they’re identical is incredible. It’s the first set of identical triplets I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in neonatology for 40 years,” said Dr. Savitri Kumar of Detroit’s Henry Ford hospital.
Lauren and Mike were finally able to take the triplets home after staying in the neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) for about a month.
“They’ve been great. We were pretty worried about how they’d be when we came home, but everything has been smooth sailing. We’re thankful for all the help. We’ve been able to give them one-on-one attention thanks to our parents, family and friends,” said Lauren.
