For more than ten years, one Illinois man has been making a living as a server at IHOP, but recently his tireless work ethic received national attention when he went above and beyond for a customer struggling to eat.
Over the years, IHOP server Joe Thomas has gotten to know his regular customers, including a couple who comes every weekend to have breakfast together. “Every Saturday they’ll come in and they don’t even need menus or anything. I know exactly what they want,” he explained.
“They are just really nice people really,” Thomas said about the husband and wife, who has trouble eating on her own because of a medical issue. Normally, the woman’s husband stops to feed her before eating his own food, but Thomas wanted the couple to enjoy their food together.
“I always see him stop eating to feed her and I was like ‘heck, if I’m not doing anything why don’t I go feed her so he can eat and everyone can be happy?'” So Thomas sat down at the table beside the woman and carefully fed her. Another customer spotted the touching moment, snapped a photo, and shared it on Facebook.
The photo quickly went viral and Thomas even got a job offer as a nurse. “It really felt good for somebody to actually see another person is doing something and take notice,” Thomas said. “It felt good, but at the same time, I was like I really don’t care for the recognition too much because it’s just something that should automatically be done regardless. I am out there to help anyone if I can, don’t really look for anything in return just have a good day and that’s it.”
