In an emergency situation, most young children would freeze in panic, but when one brave Colorado boy realized his mom was having a medical emergency while driving, he bravely sprang to action.
While sitting in the backseat with his six-year-old sister, ten-year-old Cash Cooley felt the car swerve unexpectantly and realized his mom wasn’t responsive while driving in busy traffic. “I saw the car swerving and noticed my mom was having a seizure,” Cash said.

Instead of panicking, Cash immediately got to work trying to get the car under control. “I unbuckled and started screaming mom!” Cash said. “I grabbed the wheel and pulled out my phone to call 911.” Even though he’s never driven a car, Cash was able to keep the car from hitting anything, turn the hazard lights on, and even take his mom’s foot off the accelerator. “I heard the engine and knew her foot was on the gas, so I pushed it off and we started slowing down,” Cash said.

“I was trying to go as fast as I could because I didn’t want my mom to get hurt or anything like that,” Cash said. The car continued to roll at about 10 mph, but thankfully a stranger saw what was going on inside the car and bravely opened the driver’s door and pressed on the brakes.

“Very scared, of course,” Cash’s mother, Amy, said about the incident. “Very happy that my son was there. He knows how to handle himself in a lot of situations.”
