Animal rescuers are used to getting a bit dirty in order to rescue stray and abandoned animals, but one California rescuer went above and beyond to save an abandoned litter of puppies deep inside a cave.
This past week, a group of rescuers from the Hope For Paws animal rescue organization were at a funeral for their colleague Lisa M. Ashe when they received a call about a group of stray puppies. To honor their beloved friend and her love of animals, they immediately went to the site and were determined to save them.
Yet when they arrived, the group realized the rescue was going to be more difficult than they imagined. The feral puppies had never had contact with humans before and while they originally crawled out of the cave that was their home when the rescuers offered them bits of hamburger, they were terrified and rushed as far back as possible when the group grabbed one of their siblings.
“My god, this is going to be tricky,” rescuer Eldad Hagar said. Yet Hagar refused to give up and crawled into the small cave after carefully digging into the ground so he could fit inside. Once he was able to locate the puppies 18 feet into the cave, he carefully pulled them out one at a time.
The team worked tirelessly all day, and by nighttime, the group had rescued all nine puppies and brought them straight to an animal hospital, where they were examined and introduced to their new surrogate mom.
