Most people spend the morning of their wedding day taking care of any last minute details and mentally preparing for the most important day of their lives thus far.
Yet John O’Rourke, a police officer from the Indiana University Police Department, spent the morning of his wedding day saving a little girl’s life even though he wasn’t on duty. A few hours before saying ‘I do’, O’Rourke went to the Donuts to Go bakery in Sanford, Florida for breakfast.
As O’Rourke got in line, a crowd started gathering around a three-year-old girl who was having a seizure. By the time the seizure ended, the little girl was unconscious, so O’Rourke told a stranger to call 911 and immediately started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions.
Thanks to his hard work, the little girl regained consciousness by the time paramedics arrived at the scene. “I just sat in my car, for about 20 minutes, processing everything,” said O’Rourke, who was gifted a free box of donuts by the bakery for his heroic efforts.
“It had to be a donut shop. You can’t make this up,” said O’Rourke, who went on to get married later that day. “You know John,” said a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who had worked with O’Rourke. “He’s always at the right place at the right (or wrong) time.”
