Firefighters and first responders know that freak accidents can happen at any time and any place. That’s why when one off-duty fireman and EMT was driving one afternoon; he didn’t hesitate to act when he witnessed a little girl fall out of a moving bus.
“It can happen anywhere, anytime,” said Ryan Ciampoli, a firefighter and trained emergency medical technician who was driving behind a church bus when he spotted a four-year-old fall out of the back door. “Never would you think driving down the road that something like that would happen.”
“I couldn’t believe it, it was so shocking,” Ciampoli said. Despite the shock, his training kicked in, and he jumped out of his car to get the girl safely off the road. “Obviously you want to leave her laying there if she’s not in danger, but we’re in the middle of a state highway,” he explained. “So I couldn’t leave her just laying there.”
The four-year-old was unconscious at first, but as he gently held her and talked to her, she started to wake up. “For a very brief time she had got enough consciousness to say ‘where is my mommy?’,” he said. The girl was then rushed to the hospital where doctors determined she had a broken jaw that needs surgery. However, if Ciampoli had not been there, she easily could have been run over and critically injured.
