When one UK woman was diagnosed with cancer at just 15 years old, having children one day was the last thing on her mind.

“I was very, very poorly at the time so I didn’t really much think about anything – it wasn’t even on my radar about children because I was a child myself,” said Alannah Roberts, now 30. Roberts beat lymphoma, but two years later it returned when she was just 17 years old.

Roberts was again focusing on the fight to survive, but her older sister convinced her to freeze some of her eggs since there was a chance the cancer could cause infertility. “I was so ill my parents were concentrating on making me better, so it wasn’t on their radar. Now it’s a decision she’s grateful she made because cancer returned when she was 22 years old and she had to undergo full-body radiation, which would destroy any chance of conceiving naturally.

In Jan. 2011, Alannah miraculously beat cancer for the third time, and when she and her husband Andy decided to start a family, they experienced an even bigger miracle. Alannah’s seven eggs were taken out of the freezer and had two eggs implanted. “It’s a miracle we didn’t lose any after thawing. There are so many ways of losing eggs – they can die after a day. We had five eggs survive, then three weren’t of good quality. The final two were good, not excellent, so we had both implanted,” Alannah said.

Alannah ended up getting pregnant from one of the two implanted eggs and gave birth to baby Faith this past September. “Faith is the world’s oldest frozen egg baby. She was born in September – more than 13 years after her mum’s eggs had been frozen,” Kate Garraway explained. “It’s the first time an egg has been successfully used in IVF anywhere in the world after being frozen for so long.”
