Plenty of children are attached to their favorite stuffed animal or baby blankets, but one Massachusetts toddler’s attachment to his plush cow toy may have just saved his life.
Earlier this week, two-year-old Luis Eduardo Gomez was playing with his 12-year-old sister and ended up falling through the screen of his bedroom window after climbing up onto the window sill. The toddler’s uncle, Luis Estrada, heard screaming outside and ran out to find Luis and his favorite stuffed animal lying on the concrete walkway behind the home.
Luis was shaken and had some scratches from the 18-foot fall, but he miraculously seemed unharmed thanks to his plush cow toy, which broke his fall. Shortly after, police and fire crews arrived and were amazed to see Luis hadn’t broken any bones. “It’s a good distance and luckily for him, you know, the stuffed animal did absorb most of the impact,” Chelsea Deputy Fire Chief John Quatieri said. “[The firefighters] were shocked that he was not injured more seriously.”
Luis was still taken to the hospital and stayed overnight for observation, but was sent home the next morning after doctors failed to find anything wrong with him. “I think he definitely has an angel up above, or down below that was watching him,” Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said. “I’m sure he’s gonna keep that stuffed animal for the rest of his life.”
