Police officers have been known to go above and beyond for struggling members of their communities, but two special Florida cops are being hailed heroes for what they did for a 91-year-old woman who couldn’t afford her groceries.
During a recent trip to a Publix grocery store, a 91-year-old was happy to talk to a fellow shopper in the produce section. But while she was distracted, another man grabbed her wallet from her open purse and walked out of the store before she even realized what had happened.
Yet when the 91-year-old was about to get in line to pay, she realized her wallet was missing and had the store’s manager call the police. Shortly after, Officer Janelle Jumelles and Officer Evan Esteve arrived and helped her cancel her credit cards and instructed her to go to the DMV to get another license.
Officer Jumelles knew she couldn’t let the elderly woman go home without any food to eat, so she told the manager that she would pay for everything in the cart. The manager then offered to pay for the groceries, but Jumelles insisted that she would take care of it. And when Jumelles told the woman she was free to go home with her food, she burst into tears and gave her a big hug. “But it’s so expensive,” she said.
And later that same day, Jumelles and Esteve stopped by the woman’s house and surprised her with a $60 gift card to the grocery store since they knew her food stamps had also been stolen and didn’t want her to worry about having enough money to afford food. Just like before, the 91-year-old started tearing up and insisted on giving them each a hug. “Thank you so much, God bless both of you,” she said.
