When one California woman witnessed someone in a car toss a burlap sack out the window into the river below, she immediately pulled over to investigate.
“She said she was in a car with a friend behind another car and they were going across the bridge over the river and she saw them toss a gunny sack out the window,” said Nancy Roberds, who saw her neighbor after she rescued them from the Mokelumne River. “She was concerned what that might be. And stopped and went down the river and jumped in and there.
“She was concerned what that might be. And stopped and went down the river and jumped in and there was puppies in that bag, Roberds said. The rescuer, who has remained anonymous, managed to save all six Chihuahua puppies and even gave one CPR to bring it back to life. But as she was walking home with the puppies in a wagon, Roberds and her daughter offered to care for them and find them a foster home.
Just one hour after posting about the miracle puppies on Facebook, Anna Charlesworth from the Animal Friends Connections Humane Society volunteered to take them in until they are healthy enough and old enough to be adopted. “I made them comfortable. I fed them. I just let them acclimate to their new space and now,” Charlesworth said. “They’re acting like normal puppies.”
