Most kids dread the first day of school because it means summer is over, but one Indiana boy dreaded the beginning of the school year since it meant being surrounded by the ruthless bullies who tormented him the year before.
Throughout elementary school, sixth-grader Phil Mick was ruthlessly bullied by classmates for his weight and clothes. “He was hiding it,” Phil’s mom, Tammy Mick, said. “He came home with bumps and bruises. He said he wanted to end his life and I stepped up as a parent and tried to get things taken care of.”
“I met Phil and I met Tammy and she had told be about him getting bullied. I said, ‘Well next year get a hold of me and we can give him an escorted ride to school,'” said Brent Warfield, sales manager of KDZ Motorcycle Sales & Service. “When you hear an 11-year-old-kid talking about getting kicked and picked on all because they don’t have as much money or wear nice clothes, being overweight and then having an 11-year-old son myself, it reached down deep and hit me.”
So when the first day of school approached, Warfield reached out to other bikers from the area on Facebook to join him in escorting Phil to school on Aug. 1. That morning, 50 bikers arrived at Phil’s house with new clothes for school and supplies and gave him a ride to school after breakfast. “Some rode up [from] even an hour away to be here,” Warfield said. “We just wanted to come together as a big community and help Phil to show him that we’re there to support him during this rough time.”
“I wanted to cry, it was so heartwarming. Every day, he talks about that ride. He said it was amazing. [To] Brent and all the riders who came, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank them. They made my son very happy,” Tammy said. “It gave him confidence,” Warfield explained. “The middle school is a fresh start for him. I’ve talked to him several days since. He goes to school happy, comes home happy.”
