The first day of school is a nerve-wracking day for most kids, but for two young boys in Arizona, the day was even harder since their mom wasn’t there to see them off.
For the past seven months, U.S. Air Force master sergeant Shania Porter has been deployed overseas. When she found out she was finally being sent home just in time for her young sons’ first day of school, she decided to surprise them with the help of the schools’ principals.

First, Porter went to four-year-old Blake’s school where she was allowed to use the intercom to make a special announcement. “Attention Pre-K 1,” Porter said. “I have a special announcement for a little boy that I flew so many miles to see and to tell him how much I love him.”
“[Blake] was confused and I said to him, ‘Did that sound familiar? Do you know who that was on the intercom?'” said school franchise owner Karen Verlardi. “His mom came in and his back was turned and she tapped him on the shoulder and that’s when they embraced. To just see them together was incredible.”

Porter, her husband, and Blake then went to five-year-old Bryce’s school where Principal Janis Ramirez gave her phone to the first-grader to FaceTime with his mom, who he thought was 3,000 miles away. When he realized she was standing outside his school, he sprinted out to meet her. “[T]o see him reunite with his mother who I know he just loves, it was just a memorable moment that we were happy to be apart of,” Ramirez said.
“It was the best feeling ever,” Porter said. “It was the completion to know it was over and I was home. That was the feeling of home for me.”
