Over the past few days, heavy rain in India and Nepal has lead to dangerous flooding that killed at least 15 people and forced 2.3 million people to flee while they can.

According to Nepali relief workers, 26 of the country’s 75 districts were experiencing flooding or landslides from the heavy rain. And while 15 people have already been killed and 60,000 homes are underwater, Information and Communications Minister Mohan Bahadur Basnet expects the damage to get much worse.

Thankfully, no other stranded locals or tourists in Sauraha, Nepal lost their lives when an unlikely hero came to rescue them. After a nearby river started overflowing, elephants from the Chitwan National Park came to the village and started transporting around 600 people to safety through the deep flood waters that would have been impossible for people to navigate on foot.
