Usually, dogs get punished for digging holes in their owner’s lawn, but one Oregon Golden Retriever is being praised by both his owners and the community because of what he found buried in his backyard.
Earlier this month, an 18-month-old Golden Retriever named Kenyon was outside playing and digging in his family’s backyard. While digging, Kenyon discovered a sealed black tube, which his family assumed was a time capsule from the home’s previous owner.
“Kenyon’s owners, who wish to remain anonymous, thought Kenyon had located a time capsule buried by the previous homeowners and for posterity sake they video-taped themselves opening it,” Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office explained. “Once opened, they quickly learned it was not a time capsule but more likely some type of controlled substance.”
“What the family didn’t realize was that Kenyon’s mischievous digging nature unsuspectedly helped take approximately $85,000 worth of black tar heroin out of the community,” the police explained. The family immediately called the police and turned in the substance, which turned out to be about 15 ounces of heroin.
“Opioid addiction and overdose deaths are on the rise and with the help of Kenyon this large quantity of heroin is removed from our community,” said Sheriff Tim Svenson, who named Kenyon an honorary narcotics K-9 officer for life and presented him with an official Yamhill County K-9 citation ribbon.
