After one Florida teen’s father was killed in the line of duty just two days before her 17th birthday, she understandably had no desire to celebrate the day.
Just 48 hours before Unique Howard turned 17 years old, her father, Kissimmee Police Department Sgt. Richard ‘Sam’ Howard, was shot by a veteran suffering from PTSD during a routine traffic stop. Howard was rushed to the hospital but was taken off life support shortly after.
Despite her father’s tragic passing, Unique insisted on showing up for her shift at Publix grocery store on her birthday. However, when her dad’s coworkers found out that it was her birthday, they all gathered at the store and surprised her at work with a birthday cake and gifts.
“From now and forever, you don’t stand alone. You don’t suffer alone. You’re never alone because all of these people are here for you, and we’re here to protect you,” said Lt. James Napier after presenting Unique with a memorial coin and a ‘thin blue line’ bracelet.
