Normally, police officers don’t give criminals caught in the act a second chance. However, one Canadian police officer decided to give a teenage shoplifter a second chance after finding out why he resorted to stealing.
Recently, Toronto police officers were called to a local Walmart when security discovered an 18-year-old trying to shoplift a dress shirt, a tie, and socks. Officer Niran Jeyanesan thought those were unusual items for an 18-year-old to steal, so he asked the teen what he had planned to do with them.
“He was apprehensive to talk about it, at first, but he began to open up,” Jeyanesan said. The boy explained that his father was sick and unable to work, so he was trying to get a job to help lessen the financial burden by getting a job and needed the clothes for an interview he had.
“In this case, something clicked and I believed in him,” Jeyanesan said. The kind-hearted officer spoke to the store manager and paid for the stolen clothes for the boy with his own money. Jeyanesan then took the boy back to the station but let him go without charging him.
Thanks to Jeyanesan’s help, the boy was offered a job at the interview. “It was a case that allowed us to use our discretion. You could truly see that this person was trying to do something with his life,” Jeyanesan said. “This is a chance where we get to do something good. We all make mistakes and someone, at some point, gives us a second chance.”
