One Texas doctor does whatever it takes to help his patients, so when he found out that a teen desperately needed emergency surgery during Hurricane Harvey, he didn’t think twice about heading straight to the hospital even though his house was starting to flood…
Dr. Stephen Kimmel jumped in his car early this past Saturday morning when he got a call that 16-year-old Jacob Terrazas was suffering from testicular torsion, which would cause permanent damage if not treated immediately. However, as he drove towards the Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, the flood waters became too deep to drive in.
Thankfully, two volunteer firefighters with a canoe in the truck made their way to Kimmel and together, the three men paddled as close to the medical center as possible. Kimmel had to walk the last mile of the trip in waist-deep water, but made it just in time to successfully perform the surgery.
“Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes. This young man’s life would have been changed for the worse forever if we hadn’t been able to perform surgery when we did. In the end, it all turned out very well,” Kimmel said. “We are so happy to be here,” Jacob’s mother, Yesenia Terrazas said. “Jacob was in such pain and was shaking and hardly able to talk when we got here, but everyone here is so helpful. This has been a long night, but this place is wonderful.”
