Just moments before one of the first football games of this season, all the players from a Connecticut high school were concentrating on beating their opponent.
However, that all changed when players from Jonathan Law High School walked out on the field for the coin toss and saw who one of the referees was, “Honestly, at first they said ‘We have an honorary ref’ and he was wearing dark sunglasses at 7 p.m. and I was like, ‘What the heck?’,” junior player Cole Egersheim said.
Cole and his teammates took a closer look at the referee and realized he was actually his dad, Master Sergeant Joe Egersheim, who was deployed in Kuwait. “Then I took a closer look and saw my dad,” Cole said. “I was just so happy to see him.”
At first, Cole hunched over in shock from the surprise, but then ran over to give his dad a big hug after months apart. And moments later, his sister, Olivia, ran over from the sidelines where she was cheerleading and joined the emotional moment.
