Ryan Raso Story

Before police officers are assigned to active duty, they have to go through hundreds of hours worth of training so that they will be prepared to handle whatever situation arises no matter how dangerous or stressful.

While responding to a call, 1 police officer learned the hard way that there are certain things that no amount of training can prepare you for. The only reason she survived was because of the brave actions of 1 unlikely hero…

The female officer wanted to keep the situation as peaceful as possible, so she tried to calm the woman down at first and talk her into climbing down from the car she was stomping on so that they could talk. Sadly, that approach didn’t work like the officer hoped it would.

The Only Option Left

Instead of calming down and peacefully speaking to the cop, the woman vandalizing parked cars started getting even more agitated and aggressive. By that point, the officer knew the time for talking had passed and that she was going to have to arrest the woman…

The female cop tried to subdue the woman, however, she was massive and easily more than twice the size of the officer. So when the officer went to arrest the suspect and put her in handcuffs, the suspect reacted violently and lunged at her.

Overpowered And Alone

Despite all the training that the cop had received while in training at a police academy, she was no match for the massive woman, who towered over her and weighed significantly more. Not only was the officer overpowered, but she was also completely alone…

Even though she didn’t have any backup, the officer bravely attempted to arrest the woman and take her into custody before an innocent bystander got hurt. However, when the woman lunged at her, she was powerless to thwart her assault.

“The person had the officer kind of in a choke hold, was kind of, had the officer against the wall, kind of banging, beating her head into the wall,” said Ryan Raso, who stopped in his track the minute he realized that no one was going to put an end to the violent attack…

Time To Intervene

Ryan stood and waited for a few seconds hoping that the officer would be able to take back control of the situation, or that the suspect would stop the assault. Sadly, neither things happened and when the suspect started grabbing at the cop’s gun, he knew someone had to intervene.

A Selfless Gesture

Ryan knew that if the suspect got her hands on the officer’s weapon, she would likely kill the cop and then turn and start shooting at the crowd that had formed around her. So when the woman grabbed at the cop’s holster, Ryan ran up and jumped on the attacker…

An Unexpected Hero

Ryan lunged at the woman, who appeared to be either on high on drugs or drunk, and pulled her off the bruised and bloodied officer. Once he got the woman off the cop, Ryan wrestled her to the ground and managed to pin her down.

Shortly after Ryan intervened, more police officers arrived at the scene to provide backup. When they saw the state of their fellow officer, however, they rushed in, placed the suspect in handcuffs, and called for an ambulance since it was clear the female cop needed medical attention…

The One That Got Away

The officers had been so concerned with arresting the attacker and getting the injured cop to the hospital that they didn’t have time to talk to the 1 civilian that was brave enough to intervene and never even got his name. It wasn’t until they were back at the police station, that they realized the mystery hero got away.

The Hero’s Track Record

For the next 4 days, officers from the Ingleside Police Station worked to figure out who the heroic man was that stepped in to help their colleague. Eventually, they managed to track Ryan down and found out the 35-year-old homeless man had been arrested dozens of times for a variety of charges including resisting an officer and armed robbery…

Tracking Down The Hero

When the officers tracked Ryan down, however, they realized he had just had a tough few months and that his father had actually been a cop in New York City. “A law enforcement officer is saying, ‘help me, help me’ when there’s no one else around doing anything,” Ryan said. Even though he’s had his own issues with law enforcement in the past, he knows they’re just people trying to do their jobs. “An officer was being beaten up, a human; so I just did what’s right, you know.”

Support During A Rough Time

Ryan Raso Story

After the police spoke with Ryan, they offered to help him find a shelter to help him get off the streets. They also offered to pay for some of his personal items that were damaged while he was wrestling the belligerent woman off the cop. “He has been homeless; he’s had a rough time in recent months,” Sgt. Turner said. “We wanted to reach out to him and let him know he has friends.”
