An Unbreakable Bond
As the months passed by, Nana watched as Sasha and Masailah formed an incredible bond. “She’s in her bed every day. They take baths together and everything,” Nana said about how Sasha and Masailah do absolutely everything together.
An Unusual Decision

Time For Bed
Rather than having Sasha sleep inside like she always did, Nana decided to let Sasha sleep outside in the backyard and enjoy the fresh air since it was getting warmer in the apartment at night. After letting Sasha out, Nana put Masailah to bed and fell asleep herself.

“Sasha ran into our home, straight into our bedroom. I was confused for a minute,” said Nana, who was about to turn and chase after Sasha when something outside caught her attention out of the corner of her eye…
The Fire
“I looked up and there’s black smoke coming from my neighbor’s house. You can see the flames coming out,” Nana said about the moment she realized the apartment complex next door, which was being rented by her cousin, was on fire.
Time Is Running Out
“My neighbor’s home was totally destroyed, and the fire was quickly spreading to my unit,” Nana said about the terrifying moment she realized what was happening. “Sasha my sweet pup was banging on my backyard door and crying. Little did I know she was trying to warn us of the fire…”
A Mad Dash
The fire was quickly growing and Nana’s apartment was already starting to catch on fire as well. Knowing her cousin wasn’t home at the time, Nana ran into the bedroom to grab her daughter and Sasha, and get out of the apartment before it was too late.
A Proactive Pup
When Nana ran into the bedroom, however, she was stunned by what she saw. Instead of waiting for her to figure out that they were all in danger, Sasha had already started working to save baby Masailah and get her out of the home…
A Heroic Act
“I ran into the bedroom, where Sasha was already dragging my 7-month-old baby off the bed by her diaper,” Nana said about the moment she saw Sasha pulling her baby out of bed as gently as she could. “She has my baby by the diaper just dragging her off the bed — trying to get her to safety.”
Good And Bad News
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what are you doing,'” said Nana, who grabbed her daughter and her dog and ran outside to safety. “Thanks to Sasha we were able to get out safe and call 911. We got everyone out of their homes and to safety.” Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after and were able to put out the flames. Most of the units in the apartment complex were saved, however, Nana’s apartment and her cousin’s were both completely destroyed…
Rebuilding Their Life
Now, Nana, her baby, and her 2 other kids who were not home at the time of the fire are staying with her aunt while Sasha is being kept at another family member’s home. “She misses the kids and sleeping in their beds. I take the kids over there so Sasha doesn’t cry all day,” Nana said. “It’s hard to answer the questions, ‘Where are we going to live?’ and ‘Are we going to be homeless?’ when I’m trying to figure that out as well, so right now we’re leaning on each other.”
A True Hero
Since the fire, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help Nana rebuild her life. Now, Nana is just trying to spread her story to help change the negative stereotypes about pit bulls. “If it wasn’t for her, I would have still been in bed and things could have taken a worse turn,” Nana said. “I owe Sasha my life and my children’s. She saved us all. She is our hero. Without her, we probably would’ve never made it out.”
