When a Massachusetts teacher got engaged to the love of his life, he had to keep it a secret from his students, who are some of the most important people in his life, out of fear that they wouldn’t accept him. When they learned the truth, however, they found a powerful way to show their support…
A Passionate Teacher
For the past six years, 43-year-old Christopher Landis has worked as a teacher and choir director at Hingham Middle School in Massachusetts. During that time, he has become known as a passionate and positive teacher and is beloved by all of his students.
A Positive Influence
According to his students, his enthusiasm and passion for what he does are infectious. “He’s just like so nice. You always walk into his classroom and he’s always there with a positive attitude and maybe a compliment. He’s just so nice,” Summer Foraste, one of Landis’ students, said in a statement reported by The Daily Mail.
Big News
In addition, Landis tries to make sure his classroom is a safe space for all his students. As a result, his students trust him enough to tell him when something big happens in their lives. So when Landis got engaged on Christmas Eve in 2016, he wanted to tell his students about the exciting news.
A ‘Friend’
However, Landis had never told his students that he was in a relationship with a man and had always referred to his fiance, Joe Michienzie, as his friend whenever students asked about him. According to Landis, he wasn’t sure how his students or their parents would take the news.
Valid Fears
Landis feared that if he was honest with his students and the entire Hingham Middle School community about his relationship with Michienzie, his relationship with everyone might be damaged if they didn’t approve. Above all, he feared his students wouldn’t be comfortable around him anymore.
The Secret
So for the following months, Landis kept everything a secret as he began planning his wedding with Michienzie. Despite his secrecy, however, several parents from the school found out that Landis and his fiance were getting married in late 2018.
The Mothers
“At the end of the summer, Margit and I heard he was getting married. He’s the best teacher, and he’s got this great energy, and he makes every school function fun. We thought, wouldn’t it be awesome to do something for his wedding?” Joy Foraste, whose daughter is one of Landis’ students, told The New York Times.
Brainstorming A Surprise
Foraste and fellow parent Margit Foley started brainstorming ideas for a surprise in September of 2018. But before starting any real plans, they decided to reach out to Michienzie to check that it was something that Landis would like and would be welcome at their celebrations.
On Board
“We reached out to his fiance Joe because I wasn’t really sure how he’d react,” Foley told Wicked Local. “But he was immediately on board. He said he had also been trying to figure out how to incorporate the students because they mean so much to Mr. Landis.”
The Email
After Michienzie was on board with their idea to surprise Landis at the wedding reception, Foraste and Foley sent out an email to the other choir parents. They asked if their sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders would want to be involved with the surprise at Landis’ wedding but were careful not to pressure anyone into it.
Surprising Support
“We hoped we’d get at least 15 kids to do it,” said Foraste after emailing the parents of about 60 choir kids. “We had no idea what to expect,” Foley added. “But instead of the 20 we were hoping for, we had over 50 kids. It’s such a testament to Mr. Landis as a teacher and as a figure in their lives.”
The Plan
Foley and Foraste went to the venue where the reception was going to be held and cemented their plan to have the kids perform a special song for the occasion. They then contacted Dona Maher, a private chorus teacher whose students are often in Landis’ class.
A Helping Hand
“I was absolutely delighted and honored when they had asked for my help, and once they had described what they wanted to do, it was an instantaneous yes from me,” Maher told Wicked Local. “This was a genuinely thoughtful and loving gesture for their teacher.”
Four Weeks Of Practice
With Maher on board, the students showed up at The James Library in Norwell every Sunday for four weeks to practice their performance. Not only were all the kids dedicated to perfecting the performance, but they also managed to keep it a secret the entire time.
The Big Day
On December 21, 2018, all 50 kids left school early after getting their principal to allow their partial absence. They were then bussed 30 miles to Tavern on the Wharf in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the rehearsal brunch was being held. After they arrived, the student filed into the room as Landis watched in shock.
All You Need Is Love
The students began singing ‘All You Need Is Love’ by the Beatles. When Landis realized what was happening, he instantly started to cry. “I noticed everyone was holding video cameras and I was like ‘What’s going on?’” Landis told InsideEdition.com
A Viral Moment
“Then I saw the first student come in and I was like ‘Oh my goodness,’ but I don’t think it hit me until all of these students came in and they were smiling and all dressed up. Then I started crying and they started crying,” Landis said about the touching moment, which was filmed and quickly went viral after being shared on social media.
‘We Know Who Joe Is’
“I still get choked up watching it,” Michienzie told The New York Times. “It just hit me here that I always referred to him as my friend because I wasn’t sure how the kids would take it or the parents,” Landis said. “I felt like when the kids came to sing they were basically saying: ‘It’s okay. We know who Joe is.’ So now I say: ‘Joe, my husband.’”
A Powerful Message
“It doesn’t matter who you love,” one of the students told Landis in front of his closest friends and family after the heartwarming performance. “When you love them, it just matters that you’re in love and you both really care about each other and want to be with each other.”
Things Work Out
“I was flabbergasted by how much they cared,” Landis said. “As a middle-school teacher, I see students struggling so much with trying to figure out who they are,” he said. “Some of the students singing have inner struggles, and things I know about going on at home. I was so glad they were there, feeling the love in the room and knowing everything’s going to be O.K., that things do work out.”
